ABOUT:

Bootcamp I is a course for absolute beginners, you'll learn to play songs on the violin (or viola) in 7 weeks! Students will benefit from twice weekly classes with an experienced, creative, and encouraging instructor.   Lea has over 30 years of playing experience, with 15 years teaching all ages & levels from absolute beginner to pre-college.  She is an active performer doing her solo original music act “Birjy” at venues and festivals around Michigan.

Bootcamp II is a continuation of bootcamp I, and is also open to Cellists! for students who want to keep advancing by learning songs in new keys, with greater rhythm and bowing challenges, culminating in a final group recital for friends and family.

In both classes you'll stay motivated with the support of a group of likeminded peers, coaching on how to make your practice time effective, and on top of twice weekly classes you'll have access to online content to aid your learning at home.  You will have homework! You will learn good technique that sets you up for longterm success, as well as songs, scales, and the fundamentals of music reading.

The term “bootcamp” in the title is meant to speak to the desire on the part of students to make significant progress in a high support environment.  That said, music is art, and art is self-expression - an overly strict or serious attitude to learning would be counter to what we all are trying to do here, which generally is to reach into our hearts and express something beautiful, real, and which goes beyond the bounds of language. Learning should be fun, and as your teacher I will strive to make it so!

Weekly Time Commitment:

Class time (2 days) plus four to five at home practice sessions of 20 -30 minutes.

Preparation:

You will need:

Violin (4/4 size)
Bow
Rosin
Shoulder Rest
Cleaning Cloth
Pencil
Music Stand

Where to Get a Violin?

I recommend one of the rental programs, there are 3 options: Shar Music, The Baroque Violin Shop, or Psarianos.  The monthly cost is affordable ($18 - $25 Per Month), includes everything violin related needed for the course (case, bow, shoulder rest, rosin, etc) and if you desire to continue with violin, these stores allow rental fees to be applied towards purchasing your instrument - and the instrument will be of a quality that is gratifying and enjoyable to play.  At Shar I recommend the Hoffman Maestro or Hoffman Concert.

Call the store ahead of time to confirm availability of a rental.  With school in session instruments may be in limited supply, so renting or requesting a month ahead of time may be necessary.
